Sedona Named 6th International Dark-Sky Community In the United States Of America & 8th in the World!
Congratulations to the City of Sedona for being awarded the Dark-Sky Designation! The Dark Sky designation is given by the International Dark Sky Association for "exceptional dedication to the preservation of the night sky through the implementation and enforcement of quality lighting codes, dark sky education, and citizen support of dark skies".
Sedona is the 6th Dark Sky Community in the USA and 8th in the entire world!
Keep Sedona Beautiful has been foremost in organizations trying to preserve Sedona's amazing night skies. KSB's Dark Sky Committee set out in 1999 to help write an Outdoor Lighting Ordinance for the City of Sedona and also one for Yavapai County, setting lighting standards that curb light pollution. The City Council of Sedona adopted and implemented the Ordinance in 2001 and Yavapai County followed suit in 2002. KSB also worked hand in hand with the Department of Transportation persuading ADOT to choose dark sky compliant lighting along State Route 179 and 89A over their regular light polluting street lamps.
The International Dark Sky Association's designations are not permanent but require the communities to monitor and report annually the city's night sky light level; to prevent increases in light pollution as the city grows; to install adaptive controls for the city lights; and to continually educate the public about the benefits of a dark night sky.
Keep Sedona Beautiful is dedicated to give the City it's full support for retaining the designation for many years to come.
So, hats off to Keep Sedona Beautiful, the residents of Sedona and the City Council for making Sedona's Dark Skies a priority! What a treasure the amazing star lit skies will continue to be for residents and tourists now and in the years that come!
